Auckland University capped off a stunning week at the 2011 Super City Uni Games winning the prestigious University Shield.
Following consistent performances from athletes across 20 sports, Auckland earned enough points to take the shield off 2010 title holders Otago University, who finished fourth place overall. The delighted team was presented the historic shield at the Games closing ceremony held at AUT University on Friday night. Auckland University Students Association president Joe McCrory accepted the Shield on behalf of his 300-strong team and thanked University Sport New Zealand (USNZ) for organizing the annual event.
Host university AUT University finished in second place with Victoria University taking third.
USNZ event manager Dene Lynch thanked host campus AUT for their help in securing the Games and Red Bull, in support with AuSM (Auckland Student Movement at AUT) for providing a well received social programme.
“In addition to some great sporting moments one of the highlight’s of this week has been seeing how the volunteers, many of whom are co-operative students from AUT, worked tirelessly around the clock to help us deliver a great event,” said Lynch. “Without their support and hard work this event wouldn’t have been the success it was.”
“USNZ works hard to provide opportunities for students to participate in sport and physical recreation at all levels and I think the University Games will always hold a place in the hearts of all students who have ever participated.”
Auckland’s presentation of the shield, which was followed by a performance by musicians Midnight Youth, came just hours after their nail biting showdown against Massey University Albany in the men’s basketball final. In what was a fitting finale to the Uni Games , Auckland University survived a spectacular fight-back from Massey to clinch the gold medal in a gripping overtime showdown.
The Super City Uni Games was secured for Auckland by a dedicated local consortium comprising of Auckland University of Technology (AUT) and AuSM (Auckland Student Movement at AUT) and with the support of University Sport New Zealand, ALAC and the New Zealand Community Trust. Key supporters of this year’s event are: 2 Degrees, Red Bull and Highbrook.
