A GOLD medal-winning paralympian and five Olympic diploma recipients from Athens are in the race to be named New Zealand Universities’ sportsperson of the year tonight.
Sprinter Matthew Slade (Otago University) captured gold in a photofinish with China’s Chen Yhang in the T37 200m final at last year’s paralympics in Athens. Slade is up against Waikato University rowers George Bridgewater and Nathan Twaddle who finished fourth in the coxless pairs in Athens, campus mate Nadine Stanton who was sixth in the double trap shooting and Massey University Black Sticks Emily Naylor and Kayla Sharland who helped New Zealand to sixth place in women’s hockey.
The winner will be announced at the New Zealand University Blues awards ceremony in Wellington tonight where a record 56 athletes from 24 sports will be presented with the highest honour in university sport.
University blues, first awarded in 1902, are presented for sporting and academic performances.
Among tonight’s recipients are Silver Fern netballers Anna Scarlett and Jolene Henry, Athens Olympic Games swimmers Scott Talbot Cameron and Helen Norfolk and World University Games-bound boardsailor Matthew McCormick. Scarlett will also receive a blue for volleyball.
Recent recipients have included All Black Richie McCaw and Athens Olympic Games golden girls Sarah Ulmer and Caroline and Georgina Evers-Swindell.
