Snyders close to another record

Glenn Snyders almost set another national record at the 24th World University Games in Bangkok in the final of the 100m breaststroke last night.

Winning the B final and coming ninth overall with a time of 1:02.13s, he was only 0.3s outside the national record. On Thursday night, Snyders broke Dean Kent’s national record in both his heat and the final of the 200m breaststroke clocking 2:15.60.

Finishing with the 12th fastest time in the heats, Kelly Bentley made it through to the B final of the 200m breaststroke where she was placed 14th overall with a time of 2:32.69s.

Andreas Sesun competed against world class competition in the fencing yesterday morning and was placed a creditable 59th overall.

The men’s table tennis team lost 3-0 to Korea yesterday afternoon. The team’s players Peter Craven, Nathan Lowe and Simon Wallace will now compete in the individual event with qualifying rounds on the 14th August. The women’s table tennis team also played Korea last night, results to come.

Today, Max Smith (Otago) will compete in the final of the 1500m, Amanda King (Tauranga) will compete in the 3000m steeplechase and Monique Williams (Hamilton) will race in the preliminary rounds of the 200m.

Also, the New Zealand Emerging Tall Blacks will play Israel in the second stage.

It’s another big day in the pool today for the kiwis, including Moss Burmester and Corney Swanepoel in the 100m Butterfly. The final is at 11pm (NZ time).

With over 10,300 competitors and officials from 170 nations competing in 17 sports, the World University Games are the second largest global multi-sports event after the Summer Olympics.

University Sport New Zealand receives funding from government agency SPARC and NZCT towards the costs of sending the New Zealand team to the World University Games. The team is also sponsored by Crocs.
