AUT & Auckland win Cricket

Thursday, March 8th, 2007

AUT and Auckland won the men’s and women’s cricket titles in Auckland yesterday.  AUT men’s team won a nail-biting match against runners-up Victoria by 1 wicket in the deciding match of this year’s NZU Cricket Champs at Colin Maiden Park in Tamaki.

Set a small total of 127 to win in a rain-shortened 40 overs, AUT squeezed past Vic’s total for the loss of 9 wickets in the 37th over. The win meant AUT won all 3 of their matches and were crowned champions for the first time in the 3 years since the championships were reinstated in 2005.

Yesterday also saw the first ever NZU women’s cricket match with a strong Auckland side proving too good for AUT and emerging with a 9 wicket win.
