The Auckland University of Technology (AUT) has won the New Zealand University Games for the first time tonight. The historic victory comes just five years after AUT first competed in the University Games.
AUT won the Aquathon, Road Race, Men’s Basketball, Women’s Hockey, Men’s Soccer, Women’s Squash, Table Tennis, Women’s Tennis and Women’s Water Polo. The overall Games winner is based on points won in the 21 sports competitions held at the Games on the North Shore over the last 3 days, as well as the Rowing held at Karapiro on Saturday.
“This is an historic victory for AUT. As New Zealand’s newest University they have only been able to compete in the Games since 2000. AUT entered the largest team at the Games this year with over 430 competitors and they thoroughly deserve the win,†said Jim Ellis, Executive Director of University Sport New Zealand.
This year’s University Games were co-hosted by AuSM (the AUT students association) and AUT on the North Shore.
“The students’ association and AUT have put a lot of work into organising these Games and it is fitting that they have won them. AUT students were represented in most sports and competed in a large number of finals,†said Ellis.
Around 2000 competitors took part in 21 sports at the Games. The Games were first held in 1902 and are one of the largest sporting events held in New Zealand each year.
Massey Albany won the small campus trophy at the game.
