Final day of competition for New Zealand athletes at the World University Games in Bangkok saw the NZ’s men’s and women’s golf teams both finish tenth and the NZ Emerging Tall Blacks beat China.
Golfers Cathryn Bristow and Amy Smith’s final rounds both had to count in the team event after Gemma Mathieson injured her shoulder during the second round. Bristow placed 15th in the individual competition which was won by Irishwoman Danielle McVeigh who maintained her lead today with a four over par 76. Smith was placed 19th, carding a final round 75.
In the men’s team, James Cusdin, Ben Wallace and Gary-John Hill’s scores counted in the final round placing them 34 shots behind the winning Thailand team. Wallace finished the best out the New Zealand men’s players after shooting a three over par 75 today placing him 26th overall out of the 85 competitors.
It was a great final game for the New Zealand Emerging Tall Blacks who won every quarter against China beating them 117-88 and securing 15th spot out of the 24 teams. The team’s coaches, Darron Larsen and Kenny McFadden, have found the World University Games a good opportunity to teach players the system which has been introduced by Tall Blacks coach Nenad Vucinic. Yesterday’s game was defensively much stronger and Everard Bartlett was again the top scorer with 50 points. Point guard Jarrod Kenny had another good game leading the team according to the game plan.
The women’s football team played their final game against Thailand and lost 2-1. Jaime Hackett scored the only goal for New Zealand at the end of the first half. A second goal by Hackett was disallowed early in the second half with the host nation finishing stronger.
The Closing Ceremony will be held tonight (11pm NZ time) at the Rajamangala National Stadium in Bangkok city.
