Snyders set new NZ mark in pool

Friday, August 10th, 2007

AUT’s Glenn Snyders breaks Dean Kent’s national record in Bangkok yesterday in both his heat and the final of the 200m Breaststroke at the World University Games yesterday. Snyders’ time of 2:15.60 broke the previous national record of 2:15.98 placing him tenth in the finals.

After qualifying in the 200m Butterfly heats earlier yesterday, Moss Burmester was placed fifth in the final last night with a time of 1:58.13. The race was won by Ryusuke Sakata of Japan in 1:55.92.

The final swimming event of the night saw New Zealand Women’s 4×100m Freestyle team (Helen Norfolk, Elizabeth Coster, Melissa Ingram and Te Rina Taite) take eighth place.

In women’s football, the reigning World University Games champion team Brazil defeated New Zealand 5-2 in their second match of pool play.

Despite the kiwis being up 2-1 at half time, the 55th minute saw an equaliser from the Brazilians. The fatigued New Zealanders conceded again in the 80th and 83rd minutes ending a brave dream in a true David and Goliath battle. The New Zealand team now faces Russia in their final pool match on Saturday at 4pm (NZ time) and need to win to have any chance of qualifying for the quarter-finals.

On the track, a successful run by 100m hurdler Andrea Miller placed her fourth in the semi-final with a time of 13.30. This race has got her a spot in today’s final just after midnight (NZ time).

Also through to the next round is 1500m runner Max Smith who ran 3:43.68 - the eighth fastest qualifying time - which ensures he will run in the semi-final tonight.

Today is another full day of athletics and swimming for the New Zealand team. Also, the men’s basketball team play Thailand and Daniel Good will attempt to qualify for the gymnastics all-around and apparatus finals.

With over 10,300 competitors and officials from 170 nations competing in 17 sports, the World University Games are the second largest global multi-sports event after the Summer Olympics.

University Sport New Zealand receives funding from government agency SPARC and NZCT towards the costs of sending the New Zealand team to the World University Games. The team is also sponsored by Crocs.
