University Sport New Zealand is delighted to recognise members of the New Zealand Universities (NZU) Blues alumni featured as winners and finalists in the recent 2009 Halberg Awards.
Rowers, Duncan Grant, Storm Uru and Peter Taylor all featured in the list of Halberg Award Finalists and have been nominated for a for a New Zealand Universities’ Blue for 2009. Members of the NZU Blues alumni who featured at last weeks awards ceremony included the recently crowned Halberg Sport Champions of the Decade, Georgina and Caroline Evers-Swindell; finalist for Sportsman of the Year, All Black Captain, Richie McCaw; and member of the 2009 Halberg Team of the Year, Hamish Bond.
Based on the traditional Blue of Oxford and Cambridge, the first New Zealand Universities’ Blue was awarded in 1919 and in the 90 years since, has become one of the most prestigious sporting accolades awarded to University Students throughout the country. It recognises University Student performance in representing New Zealand at the annual pinnacle event of their sport whilst successfully progressing their academic studies.
Nominations for the 2009 NZU Awards closed on Friday 29th January with more than 120 nominations received across 41 sports.
Nominations are reviewed by a Panel and considered against set performance criteria for each sport for the relevant academic year. The NZU Blues Panel is comprised of some outstanding leaders in the New Zealand sport industry, including Chair of the panel for ten years, Dr Jane Skeen; New Zealand Olympic Committee Secretary General, Barry Maister; rugby league legend, Howie Tamati; Commonwealth Games Silver Medalist in swimming, Liz van Welie; Equestrian NZ Chief Executive, Jim Ellis; and long-serving Boxing New Zealand administrator, Mary Stuart.
The list of successful 2009 NZU Blue nominees will be announced in April with the announcement of the highly anticipated Supreme Award winners to be made at the Gala Awards Evening. The Awards will be held at the Intercontinental Hotel, Wellington, on Friday 25th June 2010 with tickets for the evening on sale in May.
