Ingram wins first medal for NZ

Wednesday, August 15th, 2007

New Zealand swimmer Melissa Ingram has won silver in the 200m backstroke, and the men’s 4×100m individual medley relay team has broken the New Zealand record in what was an impressive final night in the pool at the World University Games in Bangkok.

Ingram clocked a new personal best time of 2:11.98s finishing only 0.50s behind the winner Kelly Harrigan from the United States - a superb effort from Ingram after going into the final ranked seventh.

The 4×100m individual medley relay team (John Zulch, Glenn Snyders, Corney Swanepoel and Cameron Gibson) broke the national record by a second, finishing in 3:39.06s.

“What a fantastic way to end the swimming. This is such a competitive event and to have a silver medal and a second national record broken on the final night has really lifted the spirits of those athletes who are yet to compete in other events. When your team mates do well it makes you believe in yourself,” said Chef de Mission Martin Macdonald.

On a tight course at Water Mill Golf and Gardens, the New Zealand men and women played their first round of golf and are placed tenth out of sixteen in the teams’ event going into the second round today. The leading team is Japan.

Individually, Rodney Yee and Ben Wallace shot one over par 73’s. Both are lying 19th equal out of a field of 85. Leader Ryan Breahm from the United States is four under par. The women’s field did not manage to finish play before darkness fell and will finish their rounds early morning today (Bangkok time).

Three of the men’s table tennis players - Peter Craven, Simon Wallace and Grant Gordon all won against their first round opponents from Sri Lanka, Botswana and Estonia respectively. The competition in the second round was tougher and all three kiwis bowed out at this stage.

Coming up later today Sean Choi competes in the U66kg preliminary repechage in Judo and the golf team will play their second round.

With over 10,300 competitors and officials from 170 nations competing in 17 sports, the World University Games are the second largest global multi-sports event after the Summer Olympics.

University Sport New Zealand receives funding from government agency SPARC and NZCT towards the costs of sending the New Zealand team to the World University Games. The team is also sponsored by Crocs.
