NZ Team for Bangkok announced

Friday, June 22nd, 2007

Largest ever NZ team to World University Games announced today by USNZ to compete at the 24th World University Games in Bangkok in August.

New Zealand will compete in athletics, swimming, men’s basketball, fencing, golf, judo, table tennis, artistic gymnastics and women’s football.

“The World University Games is a truly world class event. It’s no easy feat to make this team and it provides athletes with an invaluable experience to compete against many of the world’s best. Events like this help athletes aspire to greater things like Olympics and world championships,” said Chef de Mission Martin Macdonald.

Head Coach for the World University Games swimming team Jan Cameron says that the Games are a perfect opportunity for athletes to see how they are going in their preparation for the Beijing Olympics.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to go head to head against some top international swimmers. It’s great preparation for Beijing – it’s the same time of the year, same climate and it will give us a chance to evaluate our preparation so we can tweak it in the build up to Beijing,” said Cameron.

With over 9,500 competitors and officials from 170 nations competing in 17 sports, the World University Games are the second largest global multi-sports event after the Summer Olympics.
