5 Olympic athletes and 1 Paralympian are in line to take out the Sportsperson of the year award at the annual New Zealand University Blues Awards which will be held this year in the Te Papa, Wellington on Friday 22nd July.
The finalists for the premier award, the 2005 New Zealand University Sportsperson of the Year are: Otago University graduate Matthew Slade (Paralympics – athletics); George Bridgewater (rowing), Nadine Stanton (shooting) and Nathan Twaddle (rowing) all from the University of Waikato; and Massey Palmerston North’s Emily Naylor and Kayla Sharland (hockey)
In total 59 Blues Awards will be presented to athletes and administrators in 23 different sports, ranging from Karate to debating.
The awards recipients include many of New Zealand’s top sports people such as World Champion Silver Ferns Anna Scarlett, World Champion Underwater Hockey player Scott Maddox World and Black Sticks players Emily Naylor and Kayla Sharland. A total of 9 Olympic and 2 Paralympian athletes will be receiving Blues Awards this year.
“A University Blue is recognition of both sporting excellence and academic excellence. This year’s list of winners shows that some of our best athletes are also juggling the demands of tertiary study and are at the top of their fields in both, that’s not small achievementâ€, said University Sport New Zealand Executive Director Jim Ellis.
“Former Blues winners including former New Zealand Governor General Sir Arthur Porritt; former Speaker of the House Sir Peter Tapsell, Wilson Whineray, Dame Ella Campbell, Anthony Mosse, Waimarama Taumanu, Caroline and Georgina Evers-Swindell, Richie McCaw and Sarah Ulmer to name but a few. We trust that this years winner will also make a name for themselvesâ€, said Ellis.
The Blues awards dinner will be held in the Te Papa National Museum, Wellington on Friday July 22nd. The ceremony will start at 6:30pm.
