Saturday, April 23rd, 2005

Otago University has defended its NZU Games Rowing title, by taking out the Hebberley Shield against South Island rivals from Canterbury. The Men’s Rowing 8+ marked the beginning of what looks to be an exciting week of action packed sports, as Otago University looks to retain the ‘Games Shield’ and continue their South Island dominance.NZU Games host AUT, put in a strong performance to capture the bronze medal over crews from Waikato, Auckland, Victoria and Massey Palmerston North.

Otago again took advantage of their South Island rivals in the Men’s Champ 4. The race was predicted to be the nail biter of the regatta, and neither crew failed to deliver – Otago eventually edging out Canterbury by the narrowest of margins, Otago 2 took out the bronze medal over the young crew from Waikato.

Otago also put in a strong performance in the Tamaki Cup (Women’s 8+), finishing second to the dominate Waikato crew, lead by former NZ representatives Paula Twinning and Jackie Abraham. Victoria University closed out the medal positions in third.
