The New Zealand Students Rugby League side made a fine start to its brief two-match tour of New South Wales on Tuesday with a convincing 34-14 win over the New South Wales Tertiary team at St Mary’s in Sydney.
The New Zealand Students side made early inroads into the game to lead 20-4 at halftime, before being tested more in the second spell in which they conceded more points on defence and fewer on offence.
Outside backs Riki Horlock and Sione Tuiloma (from Auckland and Canterbury Universities respectively) both collected two tires, with Horlock adding further to his individual points tally with a successful conversion along with the four kicked over by Northland Polytech’s, Joel Freeman.
The second and final match of the tour will be the one off international against the Australian Students on Saturday which will double as a challenge for the Bill Kelly Memorial Cup. Last year the Australian Students beat the New Zealand Universities 26-22 in literally the final few seconds in a thrilling encounter at Mt Smart Stadium last year and in doing so, collected the cup for the first time.
This year, both tertiary and universities have combined in the New Zealand team to get a strong all-round Students team, who are now starting to prepare also towards defending the Student World Cup for a third successive time. The World Cup will be held in Brisbane, Australia, next year.
New Zealand Students 34 (Riki Horlock 2, Sione Tuiloma 2, Steve Skinnon, Wesley Naoupu, Ben Hurrell tries; Joel Freeman 4 goals, Horlock goal), New South Wales Tertiary 14. Halftime: NZS 20-4.
