NZU League team finished runners-up in National Sevens bowl last weekend. The New Zealand Universities rugby league side came close to achieving glory in its first National 7’s in 29 years before going down 30-8 to Hawkes Bay in the Scottwood Bowl final at Albany on Auckland’s North Shore last Sunday.
NZU began the tournament on Saturday well with an 18-4 win over the West Coast before going down 24-4 to the home side Harbour in its next match. The third and final pool match on Saturday resulted in a 24-8 loss to Northern Storm to relegate it into the bowl section for qualifiers 17 to 24.
NZU redeemed its two losses with an 18-10 win over the New Zealand Defence Force side, before eliminated the West Coast 10-6 in a low scoring semi-final.
A strong Hawkes Bay effort was too much for NZU to catch up to in the final, despite some enthusiastic play on the firm ground and in the heat.
The Auckland Lions beat the Auckland Provincial side 24-14 in the Cup final for qualifiers one to eight, while Tamaki Titans beat Waikato 14-10 in the Plate final for qualifiers nine to 16.
