Over 200 University students have migrated south for a week of skiing and entertainment at the annual NZ University Winter Games in Wanaka.
The first 4 days of competition has produced fierce competition both on and off the slopes.
“The weather has been fantastic and some great competition is developing both on and off the slopes with some high quality performances,” said National Development Manager Arsel Aslam.
“There are 5 members of the NZ World University Winter Games team competing, as well as 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympian Jesse Teat (University of Otago), so the caliber of competition is pretty awesome!”
Otago University have shown they intention to defend their Winter Games title after wins in the both the Men’s and Women’s Giant Ski Slalom, Slopestyle Ski and Skiiercross. Otago’s dominance in the skiing events is perfectly illustrated in the skiiercross, where the southern campus had 6 athletes place in the Top 8 - 1st James Simpson (Otago), 2nd Alistair Eason (Otago) with campus mate and 2002 Winter Olympian Jesse Teat taking 3rd place.
However while Otago may be dominating the skiing events it is the University of Auckland, Canterbury and Victoria who have stamped their mark on the snowboard events.
