World University Winter Games - Update 4

Closing Ceremony in Innsbrucks Olympic StaduimThe 22nd World University Winter Games ended on Saturday night with a spectacular Closing Ceremony in Innsbrucks Olympic Staduim

- In the remainder of the Short Track Speed Skating competitions, Canterbury University’s Blake Skjellerup finished an impressive 13th of a large field in the Men’s 500m. The NZ pair were 22nd and 29th respectively in the 1000m and 25th and 23rd in the 3000m

- As expected Korea dominated the Short Track Speed Skating competitions (winning all 10 of the gold medals on offer), almost edging ahead of Austria at the top of the medal table - both countries ended the Games with 10 gold medals although the host nation had 9 silvers, 2 more than the Koreans; Russia were third with 8 golds;

- Louise Corcoran, ranked 16th in the world and NZ’s best medal hope finished in the Skeleton. Having been placed 4th after the first run Corcoran lost time at the start of the second run. The Games capped an eventful week for the Otago University student who finished 21st in the World Cup event in Torino 2 days before and is now in St Moritz for the stert of the World Cup event there. Iain Roberts, NZ’s second ranked male skeleton racer who attends Edinburgh University, has not had his final placing confirmed but is believed to have finished in the top 20.
