First ever Uni Triathlon

Sunday, March 18th, 2007

A small but talented field took part in the first New Zealand University Triathlon Championships in Whangamata on Saturday 17 March. The Uni Tri Champs were held in conjunction with Round 8 of the Triathlon NZ National Series, with university students competing in the Olympic distance cup race eligible for the Uni Champs. Round 8 winner Anna Hamilton from Massey Albany took out the Women’s University Championship while solidifying her second place in the National Series with one round to go in Wellington in a fortnight.

On the tough Whangamata course, which had a large hillclimb section on the bike, Thijs Hubber from the University of Canterbury just edged out Dylan McNeice from Massey University Palmerston North with a great run leg. McNeice led Hubber out of the water and off the bike but both headed out for the 10km run only a few metres apart. In a close finish Hubber just came through only seconds ahead.

In the women’s race Hamilton had a great bike leg to take the lead and a strong run and never looked like being beaten. Anna Elvery 4th overall in the Cup race, came through to pick up second place in the Uni Champs.

Hubber, McNeice, Hamilton, and Elvery are all talented athletes and are rising stars in the New Zealand Triathlon scene.
