Massey Auckland’s Corney Swanepoel places 4th in 50m butterfly. North Shore’s Corney Swanepoel (Massey Auckland) was the highest placed finisher from the New Zealand team at the World University Games in Bangkok today.
Swanepoel finished fourth equal with German Johannes Dietrich in the 50m butterfly in a time of 24.07s - a tight race which was won by a Ukrainian in 23.71s.
An hour later, on what was the last day of track and field for New Zealand, a large group of kiwis gathered in the stands to cheer on Waikato’s Monique Williams as she took her place in the 200m final. Starting quickly and holding her ground around the bend, the slight head wind on the home straight took its toll and she finished seventh in a time of 24.08s.
The New Zealand Emerging Tall Blacks played their fourth match against Korea today and despite being up by one in the first quarter and only down by four at half time, they lost momentum in the last fifteen minutes and the game ended 57-78 to Korea. Lead point scorers for New Zealand were Chris Daniel (16), Zane Meehl (17) and Everard Bartlett (15). This ended New Zealand’s hopes of a quarter-final place and they will now play twice more to determine their 9th-16th placing.Â
The blistering 37 degree heat and 95 percent humidity was felt late on in the game by the New Zealand women’s football team during their close match against Canada. New Zealand’s only goal was scored by Otago based player Leanne Tiffen before half time to cancel out an early Canadian strike. However, in the second half the Canadian’s scored again to win 2-1. Whilst the team were disappointed to lose, the New Zealand side showed determination and an ability to play some classy football. They now play Germany on Wednesday at 4pm (NZ time) in the first of two matches to determine their 13th-16th place.
Also today, the New Zealand table tennis players Peter Craven and Sarah Ho beat a Pakistani pair 3-0 in the first round of the mixed doubles. They then went on to play a strong Chinese Taipei pair but were knocked out of the competition 3-0.
The first rounds of level double and single matches will be played tomorrow. Craven and Wallace will play a Thai pair while Nathan Lowe and Grant Gordon take on an Egyptian pair. In the women’s doubles, Michelle McCarthy and Armindeep Singh will face Chinese opposition while Sophie Shu and Sarah Ho are up against the number one ranked Japanese pair. All New Zealand players are also scheduled to play in the first two rounds of singles tomorrow.
After two practice days, the New Zealand’s men and women golfers are gearing up to play their first round at Water Mill Golf and Gardens tomorrow. With very different grasses and conditions to what they are used to at home, the team have spent the last few days getting used to the course and acclimatising to the heat.
The final day of swimming competition will see, amongst other kiwi swimmers, Glenn Snyders in the 50m breaststroke and Melissa Ingram in the 200m backstroke.
With over 10,300 competitors and officials from 170 nations competing in 17 sports, the World University Games are the second largest global multi-sports event after the Summer Olympics.
University Sport New Zealand receives funding from government agency SPARC and NZCT towards the costs of sending the New Zealand team to the World University Games. The team is also sponsored by Crocs.
