The results are in for two more sports—cross country and karate—at the first exciting day of the 2006 Uni Games taking place in Wellington this week (18-21 April).
Twin sisters from Waikato University, Tessa and Julia Lee, dominated the women’s 4km cross country race around a tough Mount Victoria course. Tessa ran in first in 18.33mins with Julia just 90 seconds behind her, taking silver. Despite being her first University Games, Tessa, a Science student, looked comfortable from the start and enjoyed her first Games victory.
Otago University student, Ben Revell, won the men’s 6km cross country race, crossing the line first in 20.50 minutes. The sixth-year medical student, currently based at Wellington hospital, was pleased with the result. This was Revell’s first and last University Games, before he graduates next year. “It feels pretty nice to be finally able to run in blue and gold,†he says.
While cross-country is Revell’s first love, he is also an up-and-coming star on the mountain running circuit. Revell represented New Zealand in the world mountain running championships in Wellington last year, and hopes to make the team again this year, to tour Turkey in September.
Overall, Otago University won the men’s cross country team competition, while Waikato University won the women’s team event.
The Karate competition, held at Victoria University’s Recreation Centre, was won overall by Auckland University. The event was split into two components, Kata and Kumite. Kata is a non-contact display of technical moves which form the basis of traditional karate, while kumite is full contact sparring.
Travis Butler from Auckland University took out the premier Men’s title in both the Kata and Kumite. The women’s open Kumite title was won by Tamara Glynn, also from Auckland. Sarah Campbell, from Waikato won the women’s open Kata title.
The remaining 25 sports will be played out over the next two days (Thursday and Friday). The event is organised by New Zealand University Sport, in partnership with Victoria University, Victoria University Students’ Association, Wellington City Council, Sport Wellington Region and the New Zealand Community Trust.
