University Sport New Zealand (USNZ) has received two excellent bids to host the 2009 Uni Games. The Uni Games rotate on a North (North of Taupo), Central (Taupo south to Wellington) and South (South Island) basis. Bids have been received from Central cities Palmerston North/Manawatu and New Plymouth/Taranaki. Both bids reflect their respective regions and provide USNZ with a difficult decision.
Bidding cities will be visited and assessed in late January by David Pearce (Executive Director), Arsel Aslam (National Development Manager) and independent panel member Peter Cox (Senior Advisor Events from SPARC).
The USNZ Board will confirm the hosts of the 2009 Uni Games and USNZ will announce the host city by 20th February. The new host city will have fourteen months from announcement to hosting the Uni Games.
The 2008 Uni Games will be hosted in Rotorua from 14-17 April.
The Uni Games have been running since 1902.
