Uni Games event coordinators appointed

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008

USNZ has appointed two Rotorua-based Uni Games event staff in the time leading up to the Games.

Andrew Petrie - Volunteers Manager

Andrew Petrie joins the 2008 University Games in Rotorua as the Event Co-ordinator – Volunteers and Logistics after recently finishing the 2008 ACC New Zealand Masters Games in Dunedin in a similar role.

Andrew graduated from the University of Otago in 2002 with a Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in Management and a Diploma for Graduates specialising in Sport and Leisure Studies.

During his role at the New Zealand Masters Games, Andrew was responsible for organizing 140 volunteers in a variety of roles and locations. Prior to this Andrew was involved himself in volunteer roles in the New Zealand Masters Games, managing a successful social event with over 350 participants in 2002, 2004 and 2006. Andrew has a background in Customer Services having worked in the industry in full and part-time roles over the past ten years.

Andrew has lived mostly in Dunedin, and has a love of playing, watching, and managing sport. He coaches Dunedin and Otago age group representative cricket teams in his spare time.

Andrew sees the Uni Games as “an exciting opportunity to work on an event which is very competitive on the field, yet very social off the field”. Because of this he sees the event as “very similar to the New Zealand Masters Games but the participants will have more competitive sporting years left in them than their older counterparts”.

If you would like to volunteer for this event, please contact Andrew by email on andrew.petrie(a)universitysport.org.nz or by phone 0800 3VLNTE (0800 385 683).

Maia Grant - Sports Manager

Maia Grant comes on board with University Sport New Zealand for the 2008 University Games as the Events Coordinator - Sport.  Maia has recently finished her role as Events Assistant at New Zealand’s biggest indoor venue, Vector Arena in Auckland.

Maia studied a Bachelor of Sport and Leisure Studies at Waikato University from 2003-2005 and then went on to study a Post Graduate Diploma in Event Management at AUT in 2006.

Maia has a huge passion for all sport, in particular netball, volleyball and rugby.

She is incredibly excited about being part of the team to organise the 2008 New Zealand University Games and is looking forward to being part of such a great event in her hometown of Rotorua.

Maia can be contacted on maia.grant(a)universitysport.org.nz.
