Rugby League has made a successful comeback today to the New Zealand University Games after a 10 year absence.
Six teams are competing from AUT, Otago, Waikato, Auckland, Canterbury and Victoria Universities for the Brian Watson trophy.
Students from Otago drove for over 25 hours to get to the Games to compete in what former NZRL President Gerald Ryan says “is at a level comparable to NZ senior competitionâ€.
Several well known league families are represented at the event including the McGregor, Guttenbeil, Seuseu and Patrick families.
A team will be selected form this tournament for the University Rugby League World Cup, in Brisbane July 1-17th 2005. New Zealand are the defending Champions which will be contested by Australia, New Zealand, Scotland, Wales, England, Ireland, France and Russia.
First day results were: AUT 24 – Otago 24. Waikato 22 – Auckland 38. The competition will continue over the next two days at Hato Petera College, Northcote, North Shore City.
