Uni Snow Games History & Overview
The first New Zealand Universities Winter Tournament was held at Otago University in 1945, and included Hockey, Basketball, Fencing, Skiing, Table Tennis, Cross Country, and Golf.
The tradition of providing winter sports and snow sports continued until 1999, when winter sports were combined into the “Uni Games” (previously called the “Easter Tournament”), and the “Winter Tournament” became the “Uni Snow Games”.
The 2012 Games will be the 67th Annual New Zealand Universities Winter Tournament and the 13th games under the Uni Snow Games brand.
The event caters for both elite athletes in their chosen disciplines as well as non-elite participants who all represent their campus.
The Uni Snow Games is held in multiple venues in the Wanaka area, with events at Cardrona, Treble Cone and Snow Farm.
To increase the participation and provide more quality events at the games, the Dual Slalom was included in the 2011 games and 2012 will see the addition of a Cross Country Biathlon as a fun Inter-Campus event.
Participants compete for the overall rankings in each event and the campus teams will compete for the Michael Forrestal Memorial Shield, the prize for the campus team with the highest points throughout the Games.
The organisation and administration of the Uni Snow Games is taking on more importance as University Sport NZ works towards sending a strong team to the 2013 World University Winter Games, the international equivalent of the Uni Snow Games.
