The World University Winter Games are a major international sporting and cultural festival which is staged every two years in a different city and which is second in importance and size only to the Winter Olympics.
The World University Winter Games (also known as the Winter Universiade) consists of 6 compulsory sports - Alpine Skiing, Nordic Skiing - composed of jump, cross country & combined - Ice Hockey, Short Track Speed Skating, Figure Skating and Biathlon. There are also occasional guest sports chosen by the host country.
The 2011 Winter WUGs were held in Erzurum, Turkey. The New Zealand team had a very successful experience.
The 2013 Games are being held in Maribor, Slovenia and the 2015 Games in Granada, Spain.
History of Winter Games
The Winter games were first held in 1928 in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy. They have been staged on a biennial basis ever since, apart from the break which occurred during the second world war. For more detailed information visit the FISU website
